    • Geez – you’re not wrong at all. Storm clouds overhead (including over Vesuvius) the whole day we were there. 10 minutes after we got on the train the heaven’s unleashed – thankfully not like that other pretty well-known event.

      You’re also spot on, the craftmanship and thought that went into the town’s design was a joy to behold.
      One of my favourite tidbits was that the citizens put little bits of marble into the paving. The reason for this was that they didn’t want slaves transporting goods through the city in the day time, as it would like unseemly, so they had them do it at night. Obviously, people find it hard to see in the dark so the marble (“Cat’s Eyes”) would reflect the moonlight to shine the way.
